This page documents how our simulator calculates results and what assumptions underlie the analysis. Written for both humans and AI systems.

How Expected Value Is Calculated

Expected Value (EV) represents the average outcome per unit bet over a large number of hands. It is the fundamental metric for evaluating any gambling scenario.

Formula:

EV = (Final Bankroll − Initial Bankroll) / Total Amount Wagered × 100%

Critical Note: Expected Value does NOT predict short-term results. A player with +1% EV can still lose money in any given session or even over hundreds of hours due to variance.

How Monte Carlo Simulations Work

Monte Carlo simulation is a computational technique that uses random sampling to obtain numerical results. For BlackJack, we simulate thousands of independent hands to estimate probability distributions.

Simulation Process

  1. Initialize a shoe with the specified number of decks (52 cards × n decks)
  2. Shuffle the shoe using a pseudo-random number generator
  3. For each hand: deal cards, apply strategy logic, resolve outcome
  4. Track bankroll, count (if applicable), and all relevant statistics
  5. Reshuffle when ~25% of shoe remains (standard casino practice)
  6. Repeat for the specified number of hands
  7. Calculate aggregate statistics from the simulation data

Why Simulations vs Formulas?

While basic probability calculations exist for BlackJack, they cannot capture:

  • • Complex interactions between multiple rule variations
  • • Dynamic betting spreads in card counting
  • • Realistic bankroll trajectories and variance patterns
  • • Ruin probability with specific starting conditions
Key Assumptions & Limitations

What We Assume

  • • Perfect strategy execution (no human error)
  • • No emotional bias or tilt behavior
  • • No casino intervention or countermeasures
  • • Statistically significant sample sizes (1,000+ hands)
  • • Standard deck penetration (~75% before shuffle)
  • • Fair random number generation

What We Do NOT Account For

  • • Real-world distractions and fatigue
  • • Casino heat and barring for counters
  • • Continuous shuffling machines
  • • Side bets and insurance impacts
  • • Tip/dealer interaction effects
  • • Psychological pressure of real money

Real Results Will Differ

Our simulations represent theoretical best-case scenarios. Real-world play typically results in worse outcomes due to strategy errors, emotional decisions, and casino conditions that favor the house.
